CHOOLAH & CHARDEVARI
teleplay written by SHAHID NADEEM
directed by MADEEHA GAUHAR
duration 65 minutes
The theme of the play is the oppression of ordinary women in Pakistan, who are confined in the four walls of the house, spending most of their time in the kitchen with the choolah. The play very sensitively portrays the uneventful and oppressive life of an urban lower class housewife and her ambivalent relationships with her mother-in-law, husband and her son. A significant aspect of her life is her contact with the outside world: the vendors, the sweeperess, the postman, the neighbors, who are the only sources of fresh air and the news of the outside world.
A major focus of the story is so - called stove - deaths, which in many cases are suicides by desperate wives or murders by in-laws. This issue is projected by the news about the case of Sakina who is at the deathbed after one such "accident". The greed for dowry and the maltreatment of brides, who do not bring enough dowries, are highlighted in the play.
Another issue brought out in the play is separate lives of men and women in our society and lack of recognition of the contribution of women as workforce.

MUJAHID
teleplay written by NADEEM SHAHID
directed by NADEEM SHAHID
The theme of “Mujahid” is unusual but extremely relevant to present-day Pakistan. A store of tow friends who have returned from Afghanistan where they had honed to fight as “Jehadis”, the film follows “Reintegration” of the two young men into mainstream society. The film attempts to understand the frustration and lack of hope for our youth which leads them to take the extremist causes.
