TAKEY DA TAMASHA
First staged in 1928 in Berlin. The Threepenny Opera is one of Brecht's most
successful plays. Based on John Gay's 18th Century "Beggar's Opera", the play is
a satire on bourgeois society, despite its setting in London's post-Victorian
Soho. The hero-villain of the play is Mac the Knife who is sharp, ruthless, and
rash but at the same time representative of bourgeois values and business
ethics. Then there are other gangsters, policemen, priests, begger-operators,
who set the scene of wheeling-dealing, corruption, betrayals and conspiracies
with no holds barred. The play many appearto be farce but it is scathing attack
on the hypocritical values and cut throat competition of a capitalist society.
Shahid Nadeem's adaptation places it in inner Lahore's Tibi district. With its
poliferation of prostitutes, pimps, gangsters, beggars, shady characters, dark
alleys, drug pushers, it can take pride in being Lahore's Soho. Mac the Knife
became Fooka Terror of today's Tibbi and it is not difficult to see the
contemporary political and social relevance of the play.
In an effort to draw out the parallel even further. Ajoka's current
production has extended Brecht's technique of 'Alienation' (the distancing of
the actor from the character) to the acting style used in Pakistani cinema with
is typified by larger than life characterization. As a backdrop to the theme and
to the particular style employed in this production, Ajoka has tried to use
popular visual images (Truck Art) which help to create the ambience of a Lahore
we all know exists but which many of us would visit under the cover of night
fall.
Ajoka Theatre is thankful for the cooperation extended by Dr. Bernd Scherer,
Director Goethe Institute, Karachi. We are also honored to have with us in the
cast Mohd. Qavi Khan, one of our experienced and capable actors, and Mahmood
Aslam, an actor with a bright future.
